Credit to the lads today, was understandable for them to not be at their best first half considering what was happening on the terraces. Great second half performance loads of fight from Witton coming from behind twice, deserved the three points against a decent side. JK was outstanding in goal, reminded me of the legendary Keith Mason today!!

Could and should have won it 2nd half but as said before a point suits us better than Gateshead. Some great individual performances today - Pritch at the back - Adam with 2 great goals - Brodie's touch and work rate - JK solid keeping - Lloyds midfield class especially when setting up Adam's 2nd goal - but for me MoM was Rod Thornley, he never stopped running and never gave their back four a breather which was what was lacking last week.

Yes, well done the Witton boys today. Their first goal was a cracker, and I think we all saw what a good team Gateshead are. Having said that, we are 16 (that's sixteen) points clear of them, how good are we? Great atmosphere today, well done the lads behind the goal (and the police for insisting the Fleetwood coach left at half time) Much better result for us today than Gateshead, and I think we will beat them away. Well done to Pritch today, but my MoM would have to be Alex Brown, he was sensational. Honourable mention to Steve Brodie as well. Reall looking forward to the run in, let's keep it going lads. One last point, the attendance today was in excess of the V**s home game last week. Great stuff!

A good game for the neutral today, both teams could have won it, Gateshead the better team first half and Witton with more of the play second, overall a fair result in my opinion, Gateshead supporters deserve a mention too they moved away from Fleetwood/Vics fans first half because they didn't want to be tarred with the same brush and most I spoke to enjoyed the game and agreed a fair result. Another word for Pritch too still plays with his heart on his sleave and despite the stick some Vics fans gave him today most wish they had a player of his commitment in their side. Good luck to Gateshead for the rest of the season (except one game).

WITTON ALBION 2 GATESHEAD 2
UniBond Premier League - Saturday February 16th

Team: Kennedy; Coo (Kearney 79), Pritchard, Barras, Brownhill; Peers, Brown, Lloyd, Brodie (Morning 68); Warlow & Thornley. Sub n/u Evans

Match Rating 5/5 MoM Adam Warlow

With the Wincham Park attendance boosted, following several local matches called off late, this top v third encounter proved to be top value entertainment throughout. Tynesiders’ manager Ian Bogie, with the visitors really needing all three points, chose an all out attacking formation that saw Witton uncharacteristically penned back in their own half for long periods in the opening forty-five minutes.

Rob Lloyd in the 5th minute following a nicely worked interchange of passes advanced into the box but sent his shot drifting wide of the left upright. Gateshead’s plan worked as in the 10th minute Graeme Armstrong, who’d been denied a couple minutes earlier when Jon Kennedy dived to clutch his headed attempt, appeared to have the freedom of the park before crisply picking his spot and hitting the ball into the top right corner of former Gateshead keeper Kennedy’s net.

The goal spurred the home team into action and it needed a fine save from Paul Musselwhite after Adam Warlow had shrugged James Curtis’s challenge aside. This was quickly followed up when Mark Peers lobbed attempt from 25 yards out dropped narrowly wide of the right post. Albion though got back on level terms in the 21st minute. Alex Brown’s threaded ball to ADAM WARLOW saw the striker turn smartly before curling the ball into the left hand side of Musselwhite’s goal.

Gateshead themselves reacted almost immediately but Kennedy was alert to seize a shot that took a wicked deflection. David Southern then produced fine work on the by-line with a neat ball to skipper Steven Bowey that saw the shot go narrowly over the bar. On 29 minutes the visitor’s incessant attacking style paid off again when a whipped in ball from the right from Craig Baxter was headed firmly past Kennedy by David Southern.

What looked from the press box a good shout for a penalty as Armstrong appeared to be shoved by Brian Pritchard were turned down by Liverpool referee Ian Edwards, why then he didn’t caution the striker then only the man in black knows! Shortly before the break both No 10’s had chances, seconds after Kennedy saved from Phil Turnbull Rod Thornley saw his clever lobbed effort fall wide of the target.

Witton came out with far more purpose for the second-half and brought the scores level within two minutes. Rob Lloyd showed great skill on the left of the area, rode a clumsy challenge before superbly centring for ADAM WARLOW to crash home his 24th goal of the season. Liam Brownhill then produced a wicked cross from the right but Musselwhite was equal to Warlow’s lashed attempt.

The home team played with far more confidence and attempts to preserve their 100% home league record rained in on Musselwhite’s goal. Defender Brian Pritchard making a Witton all-time record 605 appearance had several attempts that were either blocked or went narrowly wide although one header needed Curtis’s intervention, not spotted by the match officials, to send it over the bar. Steve Brodie just after the hour mark cut inside his marker but the visiting custodian scampered across his line to scramble the ball out for a corner. Peers then tried a couple of low 20 yarders, the first went whizzing past the right post whilst Musselwhite saved the second attempt. Following another nicely worked move Warlow’s headed effort went just wide.

Gateshead still posed a threat and twice in three minutes Kennedy was called on to produce the necessary saves as firstly he dived to smother Bowey’s shot before superbly tipping over a point blank range Armstrong header following a corner-kick.

In the end it has to be said that the single point each team ended with was far more beneficial for Witton and they extended their lead at the top to 11 points whilst maintaining their 16 point cushion advantage over Gateshead.

Apologises - I forgot to mention the excellent job done by JE and his men (some of them were late recruits I think) so well done boys for averting what could have been a nasty situation.

Quite right. Excellent job done by John Evans & Co and by Sprucie, Andy, Pete Robinson, Rob Hunter et al on getting the game played on an excellent pitch. It's fantastic that our volunteers can do such good work when full-time staff elsewhere struggle to get a game played on a Saturday afternoon.
The people from Gateshead, NVFC, Weymouth, Fleetwood, Crewe Alex, Eastwood Town and Marine who were in attendance yesterday were very impressed.

I haven't seen Sprucie with a smile that big for ages ;D

Well a Sunday Morning at work usually brings out the calculator, so a couple of facts, the same fixtue last year brought 278 fans through the turnstile so a small increase there, our average now for the 13 league games this season is 437 compared to 283 after the same number last year so well over 50% increase continues and we're still up on last seasons overall average of 382 which included the large end of season game V Telford

Nice to WHS at the game yesterday - bet he enjoyed it - and will be coming to all the games now he has shook off his " Jonah " status. ;)

Not so sure about shaking off the "Jonah" status, it was the first home points Witton have dropped this season!! Yes, I did enjoy the game though my nerves were "shot at" by the final whistle. I am delighted for all Wittoners that promotion is still well and truly on the cards and I will come to some more games once the 6 Nations is over, for me Rugby Union comes first. (though Witton are a very close second).

Strange day yesterday, Pritchs 605th game and so many of our neighbours there to see it happen!

Gateshead were far and away the best side I've seen us play this year and could have had us out of sight at half-time, but the second half was convincingly ours with Kennedy forced to make 1 excellent save.

All in all a good advert for the club.

Just a word for the referee - wouldn't know a corner if it bit him! In a pretty calm match he seemed to get a fair bit wrong - thankfully it wasn't the gateshead of last season we were playing!

Gateshead play fleetwood next Saturday so if we can manage 3 points that would pretty much put 1 of them out the running?

1-1 will do nicely, providing we win of course. I cannot see Fleetwood winning more than 7 or 8 of their games to play but I can see Gateshead winning all their remaining games so it is important the team ge back to winning ways next week. We have 7 points to play with, lets make sure we still have them after Saturday.

I hope Gateshead don't win all of their remaining games as that would involve us losing against them, something we definately need to avoid.

I will see you all against Whitby, where we can continue our undefeated home record.

Agree with all of the above really, poor iast half excellant 2nd. A quick question concerning the referee was he the same ref we had against bpa a few years ago where anton lally had a slight disagrement with one their players at half time. I did see JV have a word with him before the game.

Yep the very same ref who erred big style by allowing BPA to dictate instead of letting Witton take to the field and then abandon the match and put BPA on report. He also ended up sending BP & TS off in the game we lost 3-4.
